Apart from the World
Apart from the World was first exhibited in my invitational solo exhibition Sunrise Sunset at Assembly Hall Gallery in Toronto in 2025. The work will be exhibited again in July 2026 as part of Alone in Density, my invitational solo exhibition at North York Central Library. The inspiration for this painting came from a road trip from Toronto to North Carolina. During the journey, I stopped at Federal Hill in Baltimore, Maryland. As I looked out over the city, I noticed a young man standing alone with earphones in his ears, gently moving his head to music only he could hear. Although surrounded by the movement, noise, and density of the city, he seemed completely absorbed in his own world. For a brief moment, he appeared untouched by the rush of daily life, existing in a quiet space between himself and the world around him. That image stayed with me long after the trip. In this painting, I sought to capture not loneliness, but a moment of intentional separation—a space for reflection, imagination, and inner freedom. The figure is physically present within the world, yet emotionally and spiritually elsewhere. Apart from the World reflects the human desire to step away, even briefly, from the demands and distractions of everyday life. It is a meditation on solitude, stillness, and the private worlds we create within ourselves, even in the midst of overwhelming density.
