Excursion: The Story Behind the Painting
Excursion captures a quiet yet meaningful moment in the spring of 2022, as restrictions began to ease after the long and difficult pandemic. A group of middle-aged Korean Canadian women gathered at a friend’s home in Kitchener and took their first walk together along a stream behind the backyard.
Although it was early spring and few flowers had bloomed, the walk itself felt like a gift—a welcome relief from prolonged anxiety and confinement. Inspired by that day, I reimagined the scene through painting. I filled the background with wildflowers native to both Ontario and Korea, blending the landscapes of our identity.
The nine women are depicted barefoot, wearing dresses and holding parasols, evoking the gentle beauty of figures in a Monet painting. In reality, we wore ordinary clothes and shoes, but I intentionally transformed the scene to capture the lightness, renewal, and quiet happiness the day represented.
Excursion reflects an ordinary outing transformed into a small celebration of freedom, friendship, and the simple joy of returning to life.
