I am ankle deep in water...

poem by    Ainsley Gelder
I am ankle deep in water, the sun bright & clear sky To my distant left is a highway, to my right I see islands dense with trees native to this land When summer weather makes you feel so warm you don’t care how cold the water might be.   This is where I stand   Waist deep I wad out, surprised at barely a wrinkle made by my fingers gliding through The water is still, how is that possible. It feels more like a blanket then. I leave my family at the shore & wade deeper   In this moment I feel alone   To my distant left is a highway, to my right I see islands dense with trees native to this land. This is where I should sink My arms and legs move to keep my head above, still no ripples/any type of evidence that I move in the water.   I am surrounded and don’t feel familiar    Floating to feel at peace, steady my breath. There are no sounds from the highway, no birds calling, insects & voices muted. No evidence that I am even here in the water The silence meant for meditation.   Suspended in time, a brief moment in this vast universe. This is not water only space. A higher calling perhaps I am supposed to truly listen in this moment, hear a spirit to guide me to my purpose. I don’t find faith in an invisible entity. I have not found purpose   I only start to feel cold   I am engulfed once more & turn to face the shoreline. Now the drips and ripples through the water return as I make my way back.  The meditative state passes, a car drives down the highway to my left and the sounds of the world have returned.   I am ankle deep in water, the sun bright and clear sky. To my distant left is a highway, to my right I see islands dense with trees native to this land.
