Pigment & Material
Hydrated iron oxide (limonite). Found naturally in clay soils worldwide. One of the few pigments that is literally Earth.
Origin & History
Ochre is one of the oldest pigments on Earth — used in cave paintings over 100,000 years ago. Golden ochre captures the warm, mid-brown-gold tone found in skin pigmented by moderate melanin.
Psychology
Golden ochre is assertive and ancient. It suggests vitality, sunlight absorbed into skin, the warmth of a Mediterranean afternoon. It is the colour of becoming.
In Culture
Used in Aboriginal Australian ceremonial body painting for over 40,000 years. In ancient Rome, ochre was mixed into skin-toned fresco pigments. Today it is the closest natural approximation to South Asian and Latin skin undertones.
