Pigment & Material
Historically achieved with mixtures of red and yellow — no single stable orange pigment existed until cadmium. Modern Dutch orange is cadmium orange or synthetic azo orange.
Origin & History
The orange of the Dutch House of Orange-Nassau — a colour that has carried political and national significance for the Netherlands since the 16th century. William of Orange's family gave their name and colour to Dutch national identity.
Psychology
Dutch orange carries both celebration and identity — the colour of Dutch national sports teams, of King's Day festivals, of national belonging. It is warm, sociable, and energetic.
In Culture
The connection between orange and the Netherlands dates to William the Silent (1533–1584). The Irish flag's orange represents the Protestant (Williamite) tradition. Carrots were selectively bred to be orange in honour of the House of Orange in the 17th century — wild carrots are purple.
