Synthetic
Mixture of cadmium yellow (PY35) and viridian (PG18). Opaque, lightfast, warm mid-green. The exact ratio varies by manufacturer — some lean warm, some cool.
Origin & History
Cadmium green emerged as a standard artist colour in the late 19th century when the Impressionists began mixing cadmium yellows with viridian to produce vivid, permanent greens for outdoor painting. Unlike the fugitive sap greens and verdigris of earlier painting, cadmium green offered permanence combined with vibrancy.

Psychology
Fresh, vivid, and natural. Cadmium green occupies the warm-green zone — it has the freshness of spring foliage with the permanence of mineral colour. More vivid than earth greens, more natural-feeling than phthalo greens. Associated with new growth, spring, and optimistic natural energy.
In Culture
Cadmium green was essential to the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist representation of the French landscape — the vivid greens of Monet's Giverny garden and Cézanne's Provençal hillsides depend on it. Today it faces the same regulatory pressure as other cadmium pigments, with manufacturers developing cadmium-free alternatives of comparable quality.
Natural Sources
No natural source — cadmium green is a mixture of cadmium yellow (PY35) and viridian (PG18) or chromium oxide green. Like all cadmium pigments, it has exceptional opacity and brilliance.
Making It Yourself
Mix cadmium yellow medium (PY35) with viridian (PG18) — adjust ratio for desired green.
For lighter cadmium green: more yellow.
For deeper: more viridian.
Non-toxic alternative: mix Hansa Yellow (PY74) with phthalo green (PG7) — similar vibrancy without cadmium toxicity.
