Origin & History
Sage green has been used as a decorative colour since at least the 18th century, when it appeared in Georgian interior schemes. The Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th century elevated it as an alternative to the harsh synthetic colours of Victorian industrialism. William Morris used it extensively in his textile and wallpaper designs as an expression of natural, handmade beauty.

Psychology
Calming, healing, and quietly wise. Sage is green that has been tempered by grey — it lacks the vitality of pure green but gains complexity and rest. Associated with herbs, natural medicine, and the quality of light in old gardens. Psychologically one of the most restful colours — it neither demands attention nor withdraws from it.
In Culture
Sage green became one of the dominant interior colours of the 2010s–2020s as part of the "biophilic design" trend — bringing natural colours indoors to connect with nature. It appears across Scandinavian, Japanese, and contemporary minimalist aesthetics as a shared green neutral. The herb sage has been associated with wisdom and purification in multiple cultures (from the Latin "salvere" — to be saved/healed).
Natural Sources
The colour of sage leaves (Salvia officinalis) — the grey-green of the leaf surface is caused by fine white hairs covering chlorophyll-containing tissue. The specific grey-green quality comes from the mixture of green (chlorophyll) and grey-white (trichomes). Historically approximated with terre verte (green earth) mixed with white.
Making It Yourself
Mix titanium white with terre verte (PG23) or chromium oxide green (PG17) and a touch of yellow ochre.
Approximate ratio: 60% white, 25% green, 15% yellow ochre.
For cooler sage: use more grey-green (PG23).
For warmer sage: increase yellow ochre.
Natural: mix green earth (terre verte mineral) with white chalk — produces authentic sage grey-green.
