Origin & History
Cream as a colour name reflects the agricultural roots of European colour vocabulary — the pale yellow-white of dairy cream was one of the most familiar warm whites in pre-industrial life. As an interior colour, cream became fashionable in Georgian England as a sophisticated alternative to pure white — warm enough for candlelight, pale enough for daylight.

Cream White Off-White Buttermilk Parchment
Psychology
Warm, comfortable, and approachable. Cream is the most domestic of whites — it carries the associations of fresh food, natural warmth, and homes that are lived in rather than displayed. Less formal than pure white, more refined than beige. Associated with morning light, fresh linen, and the particular comfort of warm domestic spaces.
In Culture
Cream became one of the most popular interior colours in 20th century Britain — partly because it complemented the warm tones of traditional British architecture and partly because it worked better than pure white in the limited natural light of northern latitudes. The "cream cracker" (a British staple biscuit since 1885) helped embed the colour in domestic consciousness.
Natural Sources
The colour of fresh dairy cream — fat globules (primarily triglycerides) in milk produce a pale yellow-white when separated. The slight yellow comes from carotenoids in the fat. Cream is slightly warmer and more yellow than ivory.
Making It Yourself
Mix titanium white with a small amount of lemon yellow (PY3) or Hansa yellow light.
Approximate ratio: 95% white, 5% yellow.
For slightly warmer cream: use cadmium yellow hue instead of lemon yellow.
Cream should read as warm white rather than pale yellow.
