Acrylic Painting Brushes
Acrylic is the medium that quietly rewrote the rules of brush-making. For most of painting history, natural hair — sable, hog, squirrel — was simply the best available option, and synthetic fibre was a cheaper substitute. Acrylic paint changed that relationship: its alkaline, fast-drying chemistry actively breaks down natural hair faster than oil or watercolour ever did, while synthetic filament shrugs it off completely. For the first time, the "lesser" material became the technically correct one — not the budget option, but the right tool for the medium.
Properties
Standard hair: Synthetic filament — nylon or Taklon (a tapered polyester fibre engineered to mimic sable's point and snap) Why not natural hair: Acrylic's alkaline binder and fast water evaporation dry paint directly onto natural hair's protein structure, degrading it over repeated use far faster than oil or watercolour would Taklon colour-coding: filament colour typically signals stiffness — black (softest, most flexible), gold (mid), white (stiffest) — a genuinely useful at-a-glance system most painters never learn Shape range: full range available in synthetic — round, flat, filbert, fan, angle — acrylic does not restrict shape the way stiffness requirements do for oil Fast-drying complication: acrylic dries in the brush itself within minutes if left unattended — this affects brush choice less than it affects brush care (see technique_tip)
Techniques
Never let acrylic dry in the brush
unlike oil, which stays workable for hours, acrylic will set permanently in the ferrule within 15–20 minutes of inactivity — keep brushes in water (bristles down, briefly, not resting on the tip long-term) between strokes, and wash immediately after a session, not "later."

Where Taklon actually came from: the fibre was invented by DuPont in the US in the 1950s–60s as a tapered polyester filament, but DuPont judged the art-brush market too small and sold the patent to Toray in Japan, who developed it commercially with Japanese brush maker Takamoto — the brand name "Taklon" comes directly from Takamoto. In the 1980s, Toray licensed the process onward to Kolon, a Korean company. A single fibre invented in America, commercialised in Japan, and licensed to Korea — quietly mirroring exactly the kind of interconnected, cross-cultural lineage ekphra was built to notice.

Choosing stiffness for technique: heavy body acrylic used for texture and impasto wants a stiffer synthetic (white Taklon or nylon) closer to hog bristle behaviour; fluid acrylic washes and glazing want a softer synthetic (black/gold Taklon) closer to sable behaviour — match the brush to the paint's viscosity, not just the brand's "acrylic" label.
