Moods & Keywords
desert warm medium light skin tone
Pigment & Material
Iron oxide (yellow ochre) heavily diluted with white, with a trace of raw sienna.
Origin & History
The colour of sun-warmed sand in the Sahara, Gobi, or Sonoran deserts. Sand tones vary by mineral content, but this mid-warm beige captures the median.
Psychology
Neutral but warm. Sand is the colour of in-between, of transition. It is welcoming without being aggressive and widely considered the most universally flattering neutral on human skin.
In Culture
In North African and Arabian design traditions, sand-toned textiles and ceramics dominate. In fashion, "sand" became a 21st-century staple alongside beige and ecru.
