Traditional gesso has been the standard ground for Western panel painting since Byzantine times — every icon, every altarpiece, every Renaissance panel was prepared with multiple layers of chalk-glue gesso before painting. The quality of the gesso ground directly affects the luminosity of the painting above it — light passes through the paint layers and reflects from the white ground, creating the characteristic glow of tempera and early oil paintings.

Natural Sources
Traditional gesso: chalk (calcium carbonate, PW18) mixed with animal skin glue (rabbit, deer, or fish) — the warm white of prepared wooden panels and canvas. The slight grey-white of dried gesso comes from the chalk base.
Making It Yourself
Traditional gesso (authentic recipe):
1. Soak rabbit skin glue granules in cold water for 1 hour (1:8 ratio)
2. Heat gently in double boiler until dissolved — do not boil
3. Add chalk (whiting/Champagne chalk) gradually, stirring constantly
4. Aim for cream consistency
5. Apply warm in multiple thin layers to wooden panel or canvas
6. Sand between layers when dry
Result: the traditional ground of Old Master panel paintings — absorbs paint beautifully.
